You need to get something out of your job. Every day.
I like to think of it like this: When it comes to the job that you spend so much of your time doing, you need to earn, learn or burn.
What does this mean?
- Earn: Money, of course. You need to be paid commensurate with your contributions and experience. The more the merrier. Ask for raises. Be proactive.
- Learn: The things you learn at your job make you a better worker. More experienced. Smarter. If you’re not learning, you’re probably stagnating.
- Burn: If you’re not earning good money or learning valuable skills, it might be time to leave that job for something better.
I am a big believer in moving companies. During my career, I boosted my salary by 15 to 20% every time I switched jobs. It’s the perfect time to negotiate a higher salary and learn new skills that can make your career much more lucrative.
